Dear Mr Duyckinck,

I thought I should receive a note from you or Mr Mathews, but no! I am obliged to be content with reading your news in the Literary World, of which some numbers have reached Rome. I regret only that signatures are not attached to the pieces there. I recognize the authors of some, but of many not.

Tell Mr Mathews that thus far I vainly seek Mr and Mrs Browning here in Italy; nobody seems to know where they are, and I console myself for not seeing them by the hope that they are in some solitude of Italian beauty and Italian leisure, enjoying themselves as none can who keep upon the beaten track of travel.

Admirable as Browning’s sketches of Italian scenery and character seemed before, they seem far finer now that I am close to the objects. The best representation of the spirit of Italy which our day affords. …
