I was quite disappointed by the reading of your letter. Though I wrote you as well as I could both pros and cons, I had hoped very much you would come. …

I have a letter from Mrs. Browning in which she expresses their plea[sure] in making your acquaintance. I am very glad for both. Since I cannot see them now, I want some of their thoughts and, think you, not they be so candid as to lend me a copy of Bells and Pomegranates. I want so much to read again the poems about Italy and can’t get them. I would easily find an oppor[tunity]y to send them back. …
