My dear Sam,

This morng I receive your letter of the 9th, thank you for writing at once and with such true sympathy. … Mr Mozier I like much, the Mrs Greenough are very agreeable. There is an English family who love me much and the husband a really accomplished scholarly man. I like Mr and Mrs Browning extremely, and a dear and (as a companion) most highly prized friend whom perhaps I have mentioned to you, Madame Arconati is to pass the winter here. With all these persons I am on a footing so sincere that I can associate with them and not transgress the bounds of that rigid economy we must observe. …
