23 August 1851

Dr. C[arlyle] said Browning is in Town and as he knows Lombe, and would likely be interested in the Westminster seconded my idea of seeing him. I accordingly wrote to him, and he called upon me on Tuesday when we had a very cordial and pleasant interview.– I read to him a letter just recd from Lombe in reference to the course I pursued about the cheque for Miss Martineau; he said he thought I had acted rightly and that Mr Lombe’s letter was quite uncalled for.
