Chelsea, Oct. 4, 1851.—The day before yesterday, near midnight (Thursday, Oct. 2) I returned from a very short and insignificant excursion to Paris …
At Chapman’s shop [23 September], I learned that Robert Browning (poet) and his wife were just about setting out for Paris: I walked to their place—had, during that day and the following, consultations with these fellow pilgrims; and decided to go with them, by Dieppe, on Thursday … The Brownings, and their experience and friendly qualities, were worth waiting for during one day …
