My dear Madame de Thiébault

May I write a few lines to congratulate you on your daughter’s marriage? … My charming friend Mrs Browning tells me she saw you at Lady Elgin’s– They are an unique pair the two Poets– I always feel in reading her works that she ought to be a receiver of the truth from its purest source—but I doubt her ever taking it as we would after all– I have not had any opportunity of talking to her in such matters lately; & even if I had, I still rather hold to the feeling that it is best not to try too hard or say too much to people. Where minds are receptive & searching they will seek for themselves. …
