My dear brother
I am for the moment quite incapable of writing a letter: but as you would be right to scold me, I want to at least acknowledge the reception of your money order. I have duly received my three hundred francs.
Tell my mother that the day before yesterday I received a very affectionate letter from the Brownings who are in Florence. They consider me as one of the good things they got from their stay in Paris- I certainly consider them also as some of my best new friends.
You know that I was invited to dinner at the home of Lady Elgin. I came through this terrible occasion fairly well: and I even found my meal agreeable. We had as fellow-guests two daughters of Lady El. who are much more unaffected than the middle class, and one of them had a way of laughing that was pleasant to see. …
