You ask whether I like Browning’s play? No. At least I do not like the central idea nor the object: Browning has done like all minds given to reflection. He has reflected a lot, starting from an exclusive impression: and more than his other works his Colombe’s Birthday suffers from the unfortunate consequences of this tendency. But here and there are beautiful passages where his unique energy pierces through. …
