SD1660. Georgiana Elizabeth Barrett to Edward George Barrett

My wishes not fulfilled, no letter! The following is what Alfred directs me to write down for you.
“Arms we hold were granted to Samuel son of Edward Barrett & Judith his wife & Captain in the Horse Guards. They were those—except that our field is Sable, theirs Argent—belonging to the Barretts of Tregarne—a family of considerable wealth & influence in Cornwall in times past, as appears in the Harleian Mss. in Heralds Visitations of the years 1573, 1620, & in Nordan’s Cornwall.
The Hercy Barritts had their arms granted in 1768, as appears in Berrys Encyclopædia Heraldic etc. etc– The British Museum holds 18 Maps of the Island. In Ritchin’s dated 1780 is the first mention of the Barretts—as—Barretts Pen in St. Thomas in East & Barratts W, of Martha Brae—or Bray.
At the foot of Lynch’s published during his Governorship and therefore between 1670 & 74—is given a list of the several precincts and settlers but no Barrett–
In a family register we hold which originally was at Cinnamon Hill, the earliest date given is 1689—being that of the birth of Samuel, son of Samuel Barrett & Margery Green, his wife.
The Journals of the House of Assembly as held by Brit. Museum, do not mention the name of Barrett until 1781.
From which I deduct that the Barretts either went to the Island on or about that date & brought first into notice from acquiring wealth–”
There! I hope you understand this remark that I have written out. Alfred said that he would very much like to see your Hills Family Picture– And now Good Bye. I am exceedingly angry that I should have received no epistle from either you or the dear Pater.
