24 July 1853.
My dear Pussey.
Several times have I begun a letter to you and Mr Barrett but sickness and want of spirits have always made me lay it by before I had gone far. At last I have got my courage up, and the shame which kept me so long from writing to my cousin, after having given way to illness so much, I trust is gone for ever. I can have no objection to your visiting Mrs Ryves, and I have sent £25 to fit you out. I have asked Mr Barrett to be so kind as to put you in the right way of preparing the journey and voyage & journey. But who is to take charge of you, in an undertaking so novel to you and partly to be performed in a half savage country. I hope you will be comfortable. Let me know your wishes as to your future; and I will endeavour to carry them out so far as my means will allow.
There has been a great deal of yellow fever in this island, principally amongst the shipping & strangers, but I believe it is nearly gone.
The gentleman at whose house I am staying has just come in, & says the post will be off in half an hour. So good bye. I hope to see Edward in two or three weeks. A longer letter by next packet.
My dearest Pussey
Very Affectionately your Papa
G. Goodin Barrett
