Saturday. Oct. 1st. [1853]

Spent the whole day in the same woods with the Brownings. We went at 10 oclock carrying our dinner. Browning & I walking to the spot. There spreading our shawls under the green spiney chestnut trees we read and talked the livelong day, while the Lima at our feet babbled on clear & broke over the stones and the distant rock ribbed peaks took the changes of the day. Towards twilight we took a long walk through the grove—& found wondrous fungi, some red as coral white fringed & ribbed firmly beneath. … We built two bonfires, for the children who were with us, running about for mushrooms & flowers and filling the woods with laughter. After a delightful day, B & I walked home and the rest filled the carriage. …
