Took tea with the Brownings & had a trial mesmerically of letters placed in my hand. The characters I gave without knowing in the least who were the writers were considered extremely successful.

Walked home in the rain & the night was so pitch dark that E remained with the B’s all night. I could scarcely see my way home—& was forced at intervals to light matches to see my way. The lightning also helped me.
