My dearest Father,

I am very thankful for your two last kind letters …

Some weeks ago we had a sort of seance at Brownings—startling but not satisfactory in its results. The table moved round, and across the room so quickly that it was difficult to follow it: and answered questions by tilting up on one leg. When asked if any person was present capable of acting as a Medium, it moved to me—and I then called over the Alphabet in the usual way—when my Sister’s name was spelt out. I dont think that any body present knew the name. Upon another person, however, offering to act as Medium in my behalf—another name was spelt out and I recvd no communication. I have also seen something of the writing mediums all puzzling. I can form no theory, tho’ I feel inclined to accept the facts as facts. …
