My dear Sir,
I have thought it right to return to my regiment until the volunteering to the Regular Forces is settled.
I have been made acquainted with the purport of Capt. Cook’s communication to you, and most warmly do I recommend that his application for promotion, may, under the circumstances, be favorably considered by the Commander In Chief; he has proved himself well deserving of advancement in his profession, and he is fully capable of undertaking higher and more important responsibility.
I have not considered it expedient to delay the volunteering until Capt. Cook’s proposition be decided on; particularly as I am pressed for men for the Guards; but I trust that to whatever Regiments the men volunteer, they may be reckoned in his favor–
