Sir,

I have laid before the General Commanding in Chief your letter of the 1st instant with the copy of one forwarded by Colonel Lord Hilton [sic, for Hinton] of the 1st Somerset Militia from Captain and Adjutant Cook of that Regiment, who is a Captain on the Half Pay, requesting that if three or four hundred men from the 1st Somerset Militia volunteered for the Crimea he may be promoted to a Majority and allowed to go in Command of them, being appointed with his own men to a Regiment on service under Lord Raglan.

In reply to this proposition I am directed by Viscount Hardinge to state that as Captain & Adjutant Cook is a Captain on Half Pay he will be prepared so far to meet that officer’s wishes that if the number of men he mentions to volunteer for the Crimea, he will be brought on full pay in one of those Regiments for which they may volunteer, as a Captain, & to be promoted to the Brevet rank of Major, but his Lordship could not recommend him for the majority of the Corps.–
