Monday May 7th [1855]

Saw Mr Browning on Saturday, who told me that his wife was pleased to find that his own unbelief in “spiritual mediums” was shaken by Mr Jarves’ letters. Like me, he begins to conjecture that there are “black spirits & red” in the matter—that Faust was not the last bargain of Mephistopholes [sic.
