Monday May 28th. [1855]

Quite a jam last evening at my reception; which I am most happy to say is the last for this season. The large salon was filled too, with young folks & children, whose glad voices cheered us older children, as the first songs of fledglings do the parent-birds. Mrs Le Vert was the singing-bird of our circle, & the centre of attraction as she is every where. They (i.e. Dr, Mrs, & Miss Le V.) left at six this morning for Venice. … Mr & Mrs Browning were of our company last evening; quite wonderful for her to go into society. She is looking much better this spring than I ever saw her; tells me she has been taking cod-liver oil & is really getting fat on it. Says she has now seven thousand five hundred lines of her new poem written, & shall soon finish it, as she has but five hundred more lines to write. It is a philosophical romance.
