to dearest Baby

on her birthday

_________

Dear Baby. Thou, whose dark blue eyes

Express a love for virtue’s prize

Now on thy birth I’ll try my skill

To please thee, and my wish fulfill,

In me how vain ’t would be to tell

What joy ’t would give to see thee well

Oh may green Neptune Health to thee restore

Which all of us so ardently implore.

Address, on integral page: Miss Arabella Barrett / Albion Place / Ramsgate.

Publication: None traced.

Manuscript: Berg Collection.

1. The author, return address, and date taken from a copy in Mary Moulton-Barrett’s hand in “Poems by EBB,” ms, Berg Collection.
