My dear Darley

I have trouble convincing myself that only nine days have passed since I have seen you. …

My eternal adventure has yet another act since I reached Dijon. On the 16th I received a letter from the Revue in which they told me that articles too long to be used, which had been promised for a long time, would cause an added delay for my work, but that it would be published without fail in the May first issue. This is becoming ludicrous. And as for me, I am turning into a valet. I did not respond at all, and I will let it go. Two years ago I would not have been so meek.

You would oblige me by going to see, as occasion arises, the two Browning families to tell me how they are. What a chasm between my Dijon and Rue du Colysée.…
