My dear Milsand

Your letter came duly to hand the 22d it came in good time for friends had been asking for you. The preceding day I had paid a visit to Mr Rt Browning and his wife for the purpose of apologising for having detained their Ruskin volume so long; when both enquired for news of you anxiously; and both spoke of you in the highest and warmest terms. It is a great pleasure to me to have been in some degree the means of bringing you all together. I was at Miss Brownings on Saturday night last, and again met them on Monday eve at Mrs Corkran’s, all are well, Penenny not excepted. …

I sent home Ruskin on Wednesday, and have given my battle with him a truce for a few days, at least; and in good sooth I have many doubts about the renewal of hostilities. …
