My dear Altham

It is plain that Uncle John must be “a bad fellow” now! To think of his not answering your letter for a whole fortnight! Thank you, dear Altham, very much for it. I have been very busy preparing people, boys and girls, big and little, for confirmation. The Bishop was here on Tuesday & confirmed here. There were 24 from S. Benfleet, & 72 altogether.

I was yesterday at Southend, & saw Grandmama, Aunt Susan, and Aunt Bessie. Grandmama is not so well, but Aunt Susan is much better. She rode on the Pier in a chair, and seemed to enjoy the sea breeze. The little dog May went with us, and was frightened lest she should fall in to the water.

A pretty place Southend, but rather muddy at low water. I have written to papa. He is a good boy and works hard. He will I think soon be at home with Mama and his little doubledomes, Altham and Mary—and little Edward. I hope they are all well. I have not time to write to Mary but will do so some day.
