… The Corkrans and the Brownings are in Versailles since Monday. Corkran is housed at the Hotel de la Croix d’Or, Rue de l’Orangerie. Last Saturday I went to see him. …
Probably I will go to Versailles two or three times before my brother arrives: and my next visit will be to the Brownings, who are encamped at No 22 Rue du Hasard.– Mr Browning remains just as you knew him. Recently he has been waiting for a box of books from England; and waiting was for him, so to say, impossible. It is an idea which possessed him, apparently totally.
… I have indeed finished my article; and, what is more, I have sent it to the Revue Contemporaine. Mr de Calonne, who is the manager there, was absent. Not having found him, I wrote to him; and it remains to be seen what credit my little reputation may have with him. Whether this relates to the said reputation or to a shrewd desire to inherit some contributors to the Revue des Deux Mondes, Mr de Calonne has written me very obligingly, telling me that on his return he wished to negotiate with me about a series of articles, and asking me to send him my manuscript immediately. On Wednesday I left it at the office of the Revue, which was supposed to send it to him in Trouville. So now I am waiting. May he take me for a genius and pay me accordingly. …
