My dear Darley.

… Today I finished correcting my proofs: but not without anguish. They arrived when my head was incapable of grasping anything clearly: and at the end of the article I saw a mess to sweep up without being able at first to find a broom. It is always like that: I waste my strength by being afraid of not succeeding. However, I was able to get up at half past 5 o’clock this morning: and I finished in due time. …
