13 October 1856

I saw Laura off early in the morning. We started about 10 for London & had a most pleasant journey, the first part of the day was misty & dull, but the weather cleared as it went on, and the bright streams, green fields & cows looked very pretty. Got to town at one– I went to Nell’s & staid there all the afternoon, she was on the sofa—her baby not yet a week old. A nice little healthy thing. The others all well. The three younger girls all very pretty.

In the eveg went to Thompson’s Hotel. Mr Woolner came to tea, & was full of news—brought a most kind message from the Brownings to say they would be very glad to see us—& show us Ros[s]etti’s picture, & a note from Ros[s]etti about going to his house—he told a great deal about the new illustrations of Tennyson, and the new poem of Mrs Browning & about Sydney Dobell—& Smith whom he had seen in Edinburgh—he was very nice. …
