My dear Mr Snellgrove,

… I thank you very much for your kind offer of services,—my brother, who passed through Paris a few days ago, left behind him a few articles he was bringing to me,—a china basket he carried in his hand, and a small jar of West Indian pickles. My uncle Reuben would give them to you, if you could conveniently make room for them– I have now been away long enough to relish our old English sauces and pickles and preserves; it is true you can get all those things here, but you must pay accordingly. Wishing some time since to let a French friend taste our Scotch orange marmalade, for a small jar which would cost at home eightpence or a shilling, I was asked three francs. …
