My dear Mr Snellgrove,
I have a favour to beg of you, and if you can spare me the time and trouble it will cost, I assure you I shall feel extremely indebted. I particularly wish to procure as soon as possible the following book, which has been already applied for, by a friend of ours, at Galignani’s, but they have neglected to procure it, probably because it was not worth their while to take much pains in the matter, as the price, I believe, is only a few shillings. It happens, howe<ver,> to be of importance to the person who applies, and I shall feel greatly obliged if you could get it. It is “The Philosophical and Æsthetic letters and essays of Schiller, translated by J. Weiss.” It has been published twice in England, once by John Chapman in his Catholic Series, and more recently by Bohn, uniform with his Standard Library. The Bohn edition, I want, if possible; if not, Chapman’s. The former was still to be had in 1854. As it is a recent work, I think that even if it is out of print, there would be no difficulty in getting a copy in some of the second-hand shops. The Chapman I mean, is not Chapman & Hall, of Piccadilly, but John Chapman, of (I think,) the Strand. Bohn’s popular editions are well known. There is a very obliging dealer in second hand books, Bumpus, 158 Oxford St who, I daresay, would get it, or probably, you know other dealers nearer the Bank. If you can procure it, be so kind as to give it to my uncle Reuben, at Rothschild’s, and tell him I shall be very glad if he could send it over to me as quickly as possible.
I made another ineffectual attempt to obtain a lottery ticket for you, but was informed they were all disposed of.
