Dearest Aunt Catharine–

Before this old year slips quite away, I must not be prevented from sending some message of love & remembrance to you & yours …

I was reading at Bowood, Dr Kane’s Arctic Expedition, which interested me deeply, in its quiet descriptions of that savage life & nature. How wonderful the engravings are, as pictures of a wholly different world– I assume, you see, that you have read it long before me. This & Mrs Browning’s Aurora Leigh, are the only new books I have seen lately. You will be glad as we were to hear that Mr Kenyon has left the Browning’s £10,000. We heard that he said just before his death, that he was “glad to think it would be the means of giving pleasure to many persons.” You will see in this week’s Examiner a list of some of his legacies—all well bestowed, it seems. …
