Dearest Surtees,

Altham hearing that I was going to write to you, went downstairs & wrote this, & now brings it to me to send on to you—he is a dear fellow, & I believe loves us both earnestly– As he told you, Mr Winslow came very soon after you went, he came to say, he had given up the idea of going to Ford Abbey, & would be happy to do your business for you, until your return, he thought of writing to tell you this, finding you gone, but I was not sorry of the opportunity of saying a few words to you– So I told him I would write– I shall long & long for your return till I see you again—the house is changed when you are not in it– You forgot to leave the key of the Wine to drink to the bride & bridegroom’s health tomorrow, but never mind we shall manage– I forgot it as well as you– The children came home in great spirits from their drive not many lessons done today– Lyon brought the shades, they look very well– I quite expect George tomorrow– So unfortunate that you are away!

I trust you will enjoy yourself, & so we shall be in some measure compensated for your absence– God bless you–
