My dear Annie

I came here on Wednesday night—& on Thursday morning made a pleasant and useful acquaintance by the aid of Mr Hills introductory letter.

Yesterday I met Miss Cushman by chance in one of the Picture Galleries & went with her in the evening to the Brownings where there was a pleasant evening gathering of their friends. She has gone today to Rome & the Brownings go in a week or ten days– … Ever since Friday it has been terribly cold with cutting winds & snow: but I shall be leaving it this day week for Pisa—a much more genial place. I am wanted on all sides to stay longer, and I find infinite kindness from strangers—who at first acquaintance ask me to dinner or spend the evening. I am going to the Brownings tonight—indeed I see them every day—and Powers too I have passed some time with—he has a good many marbles in hand. …
