As almost the whole of our last day in any place dearest Mama … At 3 o’clock we went up to say Good bye to Mr Summer & Mrs Story who had been so kind to us. Of course we didn’t find Mr Summer nor Mr Story which we were very sorry for but we were consoled by the hope of meeting the former in Paris, where he will probably go directly from Rome. Mrs. Story received us kindly and expressed great pleasure at the idea of having us there next winter, beside offering to do anything in the way of engaging an apartment for us, if we would write—she also said she had just sent me a note asking us to pass tomorrow evening with her to meet Mr & Mrs Browning, Lady William Russell and her son and some other nice people, quite informally– I have always been dying to see Mr & Mrs Browning, particularly Mrs, and was too indignant at asking such a chance, especially as she had heard me say so one day & had arranged it all to please me—she was much wounded at my disappointment and promised me plenty of opportunities next winter. …
