My dear Cousin,
I have received your letter enclosing your Uncle Walters Will his letter to me, & Mr Brownings letter– It is unfortunate Mr Browning did not recopy the Will– The alterations will have this effect—namely, that I could not prove the Will, if it should be necessary, until it were first proved that the alterations were made before the Will was signed—& as it is more easy to find the witnesses now than in all probability it will be then—we had better have the matter put right now—and the simplest way would be for your Uncle & the Witnesses to put their initials opposite the alterations—which I have no doubt would be sufficient & prevent any question being raised hereafter—& would also leave the present Will agreeing in date &c with the Holograph Copy–
If your Uncle should not be troubled, I have little doubt the initials of the witnesses only would suffice—but it is better that his should be affixed also.
I return the Will & Mr B’s letter–
I will not make any more foolish remittances to Italy, you may depend–
