My dear John,

I deeply regret having caused you such evident discomfort, but I assure you that I felt strongly that I had no alternative.

My uncle is in error in supposing that the claim was ever settled. My father never urged it, but it was never paid. I remember Mr Trethwell when called in to arrange my uncle’s affairs at Kinnersley calling upon my father when we lived at Gloucester Place, & expressing a hope that my father would not then press his claim, & nothing has been said upon the subject since then, some 20 years ago.

You are John I also think in error as to the Fenton property being entailed. Uncle James’s share I know was not. Miss Lewis’s shares I know were not, & I have always supposed that Uncle John’s was not. Perhaps you will ascertain this. Mr Clayton will at once inform you to whom, as he is your solicitor, I would rather not write. If, as I suppose, the share is not entailed, your view of the question will probably be changed.
