My dearest Henrietta,

Tho’ the smoky walls of London are not quite so inspiring as the green grass of the Country, yet I cannot help attempting to greet your happy birth day & to express to you my feelings on this occasion. And tho’ the inspiration of dear Hope End, be wanting yet there is one building amidst this mass of red bricks which cannot fail to call forth more ideas than either pen or paper can call out. It is today eleven years since within a short distance* of the spot on which I write the sun lent his benignant rays to light you into this world of darkness & blunders. May every birth day bring with it Increasing light, until the infant rays of the morning sun, burst into a perfect day of happiness which can know no end!
