Dear Walter
Having learnt that applications for money have been made by you both to Mr Whitehouse and Mr Edwards for money which you never can repay, and which would be advanced on no other condition than our Security—we find it, at last, quite necessary that the reserve hitherto preferred by us should cease.
We therefore inform you that the Income hitherto supplied for your support, through Mr Browning, is derived, in equal proportions, from us– That it corresponds with your own estimate often repeated of a sufficient maintainance—and that we cannot consent to application for loans which are not only so discreditable, but which would willingly involve our responsibility. Any Money which you may gain by such means, will occasion an equivalent reduction from the amount transmitted through Mr Browning—whose care and kindness, wherever he may reside, is not likely to be discontinued.
We have felt anxious that you should be spared the painful humiliation of any such knowledge as to the source from which your comforts have been supplied, but it can no longer be withheld, as Mr Whitehouse has already required security for any money which he may advance in complyance with your request. It is not necessary to add more, than that we are still
