On driving into Taunton met R. Hedley. He looked grave—wanted to speak to me. “Something wrong?” I asked anxiously—wanted to speak to me. I stepped from our trap—and heard the sad news—another of our dear ones gone before us—my sister Elizabeth Browning—the poet—died at Florence Saturday June 29. My precious one’s own dearest Ba—gone to join her! My own darling, you are spared the pain of that terrible hearing—“Ba. is no more!” The papers were full of it—and I had heard nothing. Poor dear Arabel your heart is bleeding terribly! I know—well! in a short time we shall one by one disappear—and oh, if to meet again what earthly happiness can equal that!!
