My dear Mary
I thank you much for your bountiful letter. I wish I could make a full return to you …
I have seen Robert Browning this week. He has put down his son’s name for residence at Balliol College, Oxford, for Michaelmas Term 1867, when young Robert will be more than 18—(he will be 14 the 9th of this month). I helped Browning a little in this matter; as I was formerly Fellow of Balliol—but he has repaid me richly with thanks, as if I had given him a fortune. The son will have to work hard in Latin and Greek.– For Latin he has read Latin Prose extracts, and has translated constantly English into Latin—but he has not yet read any Virgil– — In Greek, he is in the Greek Verbs. — He has gone on with Italian, French, German, Music and Drawing. This explains his not having much greater progress in Greek. …
