My dear Sir.

I have not yet thanked you for your so kindly sending to me your very interesting volume of Essays, which were the more acceptable, as although I have your “Melanges de Critiques religieuses” I had never read any of the other papers. We have seen Monsieur Boutmy and his friend Monsieur Paul Tripier several times since they came to London, and I was glad to have an opportunity of introducing the former to Kinglake, Colenso, Browning, Matthew Arnold, and some others. …
