Dear Alfred.
I have found amongst some of the old papers connected with the attempted advance on the slave compensation fund in former years by your brothers a rough pedigree by you shewing the state of the family. Now as you are aware your brother Charles is going to deal with the Epsom property it has become necessary to look into the title and the effect of the will is not so clear as might be and it may be of importance to see who would be the heir at law of your great grandfather Edward Barrett at the death of your uncle Samuel in 1838. The old gentleman according to your pedigree, seems to have several children under his son Samuel whose children he clearly treats as illegi[ti]mate. Now as at one time you made a study of the subject will you let me know by return of post whether any of his other children George Henry and Sarah left issue and who and if any of their descendants are now alive.
I want to write by the next mail to your brother which leaves on the 17 so shall be glad if you will do this at once– If you have the pedigree let me have it and I will return it. I send you rough pedigree referred to above–
