SD2699.  William Howitt to Samuel Carter Hall

As published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 31, 304 (in part).

[?London]

7 June 1864

Offered for sale in Christie’s Catalogue, 23 January 1974, lot 289. 4 pp. 8vo. Howitt writes: “I hear that Browning has written a very offensive chapter of his new poem on Home, and with an avowal of the utter fraudulence and folly of spiritualism. Perhaps a more flagrant disrespect to the memory of his wife, who was a steadfast spiritualist, could not have been hit upon him.”
