My dear Mr Schlesinger

How can I possibly find words which can express the feelings I have at your unmerited kindness. There was nothing I was desiring to have more than a gun: and here all of a sudden I find myself in possession of a perfect beauty, as far as I am able to judge without trying it. Every body who has seen it admires it exceedingly and I am burning with impatience to have a shot with it, and you may be assured that I shall always keep it and whenever I look at it (which is half-a-dozen times a day) I shall remember what a kind friend I have on the other side of the wide ocean. Hoping that you also will not forget me.
