My dear Mr Story

I have received here both your notes,—the delay in the delivery of the first being, I see by the postmarks, attributable not to the Continental but to the English Post Office.

And so I wrote, saying nothing. Still, as an old lawyer with whom precision is a duty, I ought to be flogged. By all means perfect your work, as it will be perfected by its translation from clay into marble. To possess it will be to me a very great gratification. R. Browning’s opinion & feeling upon such a matter should of course be regarded most tenderly, but I think that he looks on your attempt with fear not dislike, & that he will be as much gratified with the result as I shall be.
