I am sorry to say that Mr Landor did not live quite long enough to know of this change. He died on Saturday the 17th of September; this day fortnight. I have received no private account of the details of his death. I scarcely expected ever to see him again, and the evident increase in his bodily infirmity between January and May last made it hardly desirable that his life should be much prolonged. He felt this himself—and when, in answer to a question from him, I told him that Robert Browning was not likely to come to Florence till September, he cried out, Ah!—I shall probably not be alive then. Still I cannot but be touched by the certainty that I shall never see him more here. If he had lived to the 30th of next January, he would have been just 90. …
