My dear Miss Cushman–

You were so very kind to us last spring when we were in Rome, in consequence of a letter to you which we were fortunate enough to bring from our friend Mr Browning that—I am going to venture to be so bold as to introduce Mr Hall a friend of my sons—to your kind notice. He is a very rising young man of much talent & is to be liked[.] I believe to all respects, he goes to Rome to recover from the effects of a terrible shock which fell upon him some months ago—when the young lady he was engaged to be married to, was drowned before his eyes–

I trust that all has been going well with you & your household since we had the pleasure of seeing you. We have often looked back upon those days since which we have gone through much sorrow– May we ask to be remembered most kindly to Miss Hosmer & Miss Stebbings, & Believe me
