… Browning is as usual. He dines here every Sunday. I do not think that the petting and dowagering of last season has done him good—as indeed when was such coddling ever serviceable to anybody? He is not the manly fellow he was in regard to criticism—but Sillily sensitive, and making everything matter of self-reference. This between ourselves—because you know how otherwise noble he is. But I have been obliged to speak harshly & strongly to him. …
