My dearest Surtees

We have taken your very good advice so we shall not be married till after lent– I hope for this fast of souls it will be considered as an act of penance & relieve us of some of our many sins– We are very much obliged to you for your kind invitation but I think we shall go to Paris– It appears to me I am always thanking you for some new kindness or other; I hope some day or other I shall be able to return it—but kindness is not like money, for in the first case you can only return the interest & keep capital, but in the lat[t]er you have to return both principal & interest–
