SD2831.  Alfred Moulton-Barrett to George Goodin Moulton-Barrett

27th June 1866

I had a letter from Stephen Moulton Esqre of Kingston House Bradford on Avon, in which he gave this account of himself & family– “that his father died in 1798—he was his eldest son—had lived all his life in the States up to within the last 25 years—that his father had two brothers named George & John—that one of these—which he could not remember—settled and lived in Montego Bay—the other was in the army and fought in the battle of Chinsura E. Indies. His rank was that of Captain at the date of that battle—this his father always said he was descended from the Moultons of Plimton, & wrote that he used their arms which are thus:

Now I believe this same Moulton of Montego Bay was either father of our grandfather—the date of Stephen’s birth prevents almost that supposition—or that Stephen’s fathers brothers was not named either John or George, but Robert or Charles & moreover that he had another brother in Montego Bay– If there had been another Moulton in Montego Bay, we must have heard of it, & Storm agrees with me in thinking, he, Stephen, is our 1st cousin once removed. I have written to him as being of our family—asking him if he can be quite certain as to the nomenclature of his father’s brothers. Storm has sent him our pedigree. He sent me extracts from the “Visitation of Devonshire” 1020 tracing the Moultons of Plimton for five generations. He sent me also extracts from “Farmer’s First settlements” in America in which the Moultons are stated to have been men of substance but it appeared most of them were “called to the ministry”. The third document he sent me was a letter from some New Yorker respecting the posts occupied in the States by members of the Moulton family.–
