My dearest Richard, after all it seems I need not have come to London at all …

Several pleasant things have happened to me since I have been in town, but the pleasantest of all is a long visit paid us by Robert Browning on Sunday. Dear Richard he is the greatest and most charming of men. He told us the story of his new poem; he took about an hour & a half over it—& we all got immensely excited. It will be a grand work, & I feel as proud as a peacock of having heard it from his own lips; I wish you had been there. He asked after you of course.
