My dearest Polly,
Many thanks for your kind letter which I received this morning. You seem to be having a pretty time of it in London, no work, and lots of fun, while I am having both. Rifle-shooting will commence here on Tuesday to go on every evening afterwards; I believe we are to have a shooting match with Marlborough on the first of June, each on our own ground, to send the scores, great nonsense I think, because soon afterwards we shall shoot against them all at Wimbledon. Such beautiful weather we have had here during the past week, I bathed every day except Monday, it was delicious most days, but rather cold yesterday, as there was a good wind up, and no sun. I hope you will forgive me for not having written to you before but I had to write to Papa last Sunday and to Mama in the week and I have to write to Papa to-night. How jolly it will be for you to be able to go to the theatre. Tell Pen that the boating club gets on fairly here as yet, I believe there is some idea of a four-oared race on the river Hamble against a South Hants crew. Mr Hornby (2d master) who was in the Oxford eight two years, was coaching them last night, but I am afraid they won’t do very much. I believe our first cricket is on the 28th instant, with the M.C.C. and Ground.
Sunday evening
I am afraid I must conclude this letter, though very short. With best love to all I remain ever
Your very affectionate brother
A. S. Altham
