Dear Friend,

I am deeply grieved to hear of dear Claire’s illness. I trust it may not prove so serious as you fear. Pray send me one line—only a line—to let me know how she progresses. This very morning I was going to write and wish her a happy Christmas—and beg her acceptance for my sake of a book which I thought would please her: it will not do for the book-post, however, so I must keep it awhile.

God bless you both, and bring you safely through this trouble.
