Dear Sir

I am truly sorry that I am obliged to return the enclosed Letter to you, I am the more sorry because it is the first communication you have done me the favour of making to the “Pall Mall Gazette” since your return to London. If you have read the correspondence that has appeared in the newspaper since your Letter was written you will readily understand why we do not think it advisable to print any communications which might seem to interfere with the course of that correspondence.

Mr Browning mentioned a few days since that I might hope for the honour of a visit from you when you happened to be in the neighbourhood and I hope that I need hardly say that it will afford me much pleasure to have an opportunity of thanking you personally for the articles you sent to me from Rome
